Abbott Street Redesign, Kelowna, BC (2002)

MVH joined with Stantec and the City of Kelowna to facilitate and develop conceptual designs for Abbott Street in Kelowna. The street is a major corridor in one of the Kelowna’s highly valued historic districts parallel to the waterfront. At the time, many commuters used it as a short cut to the primary bridge across Lake Okanagan. The resulting car volumes and car speeds prompted the City of Kelowna to examine traffic calming and amenity improvements along the route.

MVH facilitated a number of workshops with residents to develop what has become known as a “recreation corridor” and a great community asset today. Designing a generous walking path and a bicycle path, while narrowing the roadway, Abbott Street has become a true promenade for residents and visitors to Kelowna.

This multi-faceted recreation corridor in Kelowna includes everyone and excludes no one.

The sequence and experiences changes along Abbott Street with the new design. Complemented by historic plaques that recognize its rich history, private gardens, a diversity of tree species, supportive lighting, and lots of places to socialize, it has become one of the special outdoor living rooms in Kelowna.
